HIDDEN
Rookwood General Cemetery’s 11th annual sculpture exhibition has evolved. A new name, new curator and a new student program has enabled schools to get involved.
Previously known as HIDDEN – A Rookwood Sculpture Walk, HIDDEN Rookwood Sculptures, is an open-air exhibition that features a range of artworks strategically placed throughout the historic Rookwood Cemetery.
This year we have taken the opportunity to rebrand the exhibition and open up the show to a wider number of artists, by creating three unique art categories.  Our primary exhibition, HIDDEN Rookwood Sculptures, showcases 35 works with many of the artists expressing a personal connection to the cemetery through their sculptures.
To bring HIDDEN 2019 to life, we have also appointed a new curator.  Dr. Kath Fries, a well-known artist, researcher and writer, is responsible for HIDDEN’s new creative direction and we’re pleased to see how she has worked with the artists to highlight the beautiful aspects of the cemetery.
Rookwood is one of the last operating Victorian Cemeteries in the world.  It is the final resting place for over one million people and features over 350 modern and heritage interment locations.  HIDDEN provides the community with a way to learn more about the cemetery by exploring its unique heritage, whilst at the same time supporting the Australian art and tourism industries.

The first artwork of HIDDEN 2019 is located next to the American War Pavilion, opposite the Rookwood General Cemetery Office on Hawthorne Avenue. Please come to the Office first to collect your catalogue/guide/map.

Opening Times

The exhibition is open from sunrise to sunset, every day.

Catalogues and visitor’s guides are available from the RGC office during office hours:

  • Monday to Friday, 7.30am – 5.00pm
  • Saturday to Sunday, 9.00am – 3.00pm (or the Friends of Rookwood stall opposite the office from 10.00am – 1.00pm only)

Directions

For more information on how to get to Rookwood and the Office, please visit the Rookwood Cemetery website.

Parking

Parking is available opposite the office, opposite All Souls and along Hawthorne Avenue. HIDDEN is a sculptural WALK ONLY.  For the safety of all of our visitors, please do not drive around the exhibition.

Pet Companions

Dogs are permitted on a leash throughout the Cemetery. Service dogs are most welcome too.

Accessibilty

Please know that the HIDDEN route is not easily accessible and care must be taken at all times due to the uneven ground. Walking stick chairs are available from the Rookwood Office (for a refundable deposit) for visitors who need extra assistance along the walk.

HIDDEN Map

This year’s walk is a loop.  Our main exhibition sculpture artworks lead the way around the cemetery from the American War Pavilion (which also displays on rotation HIDDEN Rookwood Films), south down the Village Green, west over the canal and up to the Elephant House and surrounding area, then back to the newly restored Grave Digger’s Hut. Student artworks then lead the walk back to Hawthorne Avenue.
